Some tetrominos have crystals in them. Players must clear a line containing a crystal to collect it. This brings a lot of strategy for the timing of your piece drops because you want to get the ones with crystals, and leave the ones without crystals for the opponent. However you also want to let the opponent have the pieces you don't have a spot for, and get the ones you do want.

* 1 crystal is usually a small attack or a defensive move,

* 2 crystal usually interferes with the opponent's screen or controls,
Each character has 4 attacks. These are unlocked progressively by collecting crystals. The meter on the side indicates the amount of crystals needed for the next level with a yellow arrow, and the level 4 attack with a purple arrow. Tetris Battle Gaiden[a] is a Tetris game developed and published in 1993 by Bullet Proof Software for the Super Famicom. Players compete in versus matches, against a CPU opponent, or a local opponent. The game is notable for its unique gameplay involving crystals and character abilities.

Gameplay

Both players draw from the same 3 piece preview. The player who places the next piece gets the next one at the top.

Some tetrominos have crystals in them. Players must clear a line containing a crystal to collect it. Since the pieces are shared, players must play strategically to get pieces with crystals, and leave the ones without crystals for the opponent.

Each character has 4 attacks. These are unlocked progressively by collecting crystals. The meter on the side indicates the amount of crystals needed for the next level with a yellow arrow, and the level 4 attack with a purple arrow. Once the player has enough crystals for an attack, they can press Up on the dpad to active the attack. Activating an attack discards the active piece for both players.

The number of crystals needed per level can be configured in the settings menu. By default one crystal is needed, but it can be changed to be up to five.

Topping out

Blocks that get pushed up the vanishing zone are deleted. The only way to top out is by place a tetromino partially or fully above the 20th row.

Characters and abilities

Halloween (Tetris Battle Gaiden).png Halloween
  • Level 1 Fry - Fills the bottom 3 rows with blocks. These lines are cleared once the next piece is placed, and the lines are sent to the opponent. Crystal blocks are converted into normal blocks and are not collected.
  • Level 2 Dark - Blacks out the opponents playfield, and only a small section under the active piece is visible.
  • Level 3 Vampire - Steals the opponent's crystals.
  • Level 4 Bomb - Destroy random blocks on the opponent's field.
Mirurun (Tetris Battle Gaiden).png Mirurun
  • Level 1 Mirurun - Removes the bottom 4 rows of the player's field. The lines removed are not sent to the opponent.
  • Level 2 Inversion - Inverts the opponent's controls for their next 3 pieces.
  • Level 3 Pentaris - Send five lines of garbage to the opponent.
  • Level 4 Sirtet - All rows containing blocks on the opponent's field are inverted, so that spaces are converted to blocks and non-crystal blocks are converted to spaces.

Blocks at the extremities are pushed out and lost. Any floating non crystal blocks fall as far as they can. This leaves a 4 wide center well. Blocks do not fall after the split if they are stone, or if Ninja's web attack is active.
  • Level 2 Rotation - The opponents next 3 pieces will rotate rapidly when they try to soft-drop. Rotating a piece with A or B buttons will rotate the piece rapidly as well. If a piece cannot rotate, such as when next to a wall, it can not be soft dropped. Pieces can also not be manually locked.
  • Level 3 Curse - During this attack, every piece the opponent places will one stone garbage line will be added to their stack. Additionally lines sent as garbage will also be stone.
  • Level 4 Prayer - Randomly uses any of the opponent's level 4s.
Aladdin (Tetris Battle Gaiden).png Aladdin
