Puyo Puyo Tetris is a crossover of Tetris and Puyo Puyo published by Sega. The game initially saw a release exclusively in Japan on various platforms in 2014. In 2017 it was rereleased on the PS4 and Switch worldwide. In 2018 it was released on Steam for Windows. It is also the first game in the Puyo Puyo series since Puyo Puyo Fever to be released in the Americas and Europe, as well as the second Tetris game to be released on Steam.
Puyo Puyo Tetris S is the title of the Japanese Nintendo Switch release.
Modes
Adventure
The story mode, named Adventure Mode, is a master storyline spanning 10 acts each with 10 stages. Each stage is either a battle with a CPU player or a single player challenge. The last 3 chapters, which were originally bought as DLC, can be played for additional alternative voice clips, backgrounds, and Puyo and Tetris skins.
Versus
Players can choose Puyo Puyo or Tetris before the start of a match. If a Tetris player has at least one Puyo opponent, the Tetris players' attacks will be queued in the meter on the left of their field and only sent when a non-line clearing piece locks.
Swap
There are two fields that swap every 20/25 (default)/30 seconds: Puyo and Tetris. At the start of each round, a spinner will appear to determine which style the players will play on first. When the timer at the top-center reaches 0, the boards are swapped over to the other playstyle before resetting. A piece will still fall when in the back, and if it manages to create a chain it will create a swap combo, which will stack on top of chains and line attacks, but if it does not, it simply disappears. If one of their fields is topped out and gets swapped with the other non-topped out field, the player must eliminate their opponent before the field swaps or they get eliminated.
Fusion
Also known as PuyoTet Mix, this mode has both Puyo Puyo and Tetris are combined, with each character having their own unique dropset that mixes both Puyo pieces and tetrominoes. It has an 8 × 17 field unlike other modes. Puyo pieces and tetrominoes both count towards a chain via a combo system, with the left number representing the Puyo chain and the right number representing the line chain.
Tetris pieces will crush any Puyo pieces below them and "swap" them by dropping from the top. Hard dropping it will clear them immediately while manually dropping them will crush each of them one row at a time.
Garbage will drop in the third interval if no chains have been set off, and they disappear if crushed by a Tetris piece.
Big Bang
In Big Bang, all players start in a Fever state (Puyo Puyo) or Lucky Attack (Tetris). Each player is given the task to clear as many preset boards as they can. Puyo Puyo's preset boards are similar to Fever, except organized in a way to make getting All Clears easier. Tetris' preset boards involve using a specific type of Tetromino in order to clear out the board in a specific way, with higher levels adding more types of Tetrominoes. After the round timer expires, both players stop playing Fever/Lucky Attack, but pausing until a player makes their last move. The players' attack power gets absorbed in a black hole, and then explodes with the titular Big Bang. The game then compares the points the players have made, and whoever has the strongest power will inflict damage onto the other players. Players who get damaged will have their field damaged as well, reducing their HP bar. When HP is 0, the player's field is destroyed, and they get eliminated from the match. The last one standing wins.
Party
This is a time-limited mode where players compete for the highest score. The same rules to Versus apply, except there are items and when one player tops out an opponent, the player will gain 3,000 points, and their opponent's field resets. Item blocks are 2 x 2 in size for Tetris, and when cleared, a item is randomly chosen. The items' functions include turning the opponents' next pieces to pentominoes, reflecting garbage, and increasing the opponents' drop speed. At the end of a Party match, the player with the highest score wins.
Pentomino Rotations
In this game, only 7 pentomino pieces are available. This is because each piece is based on a regular Tetromino, with one block attached to it, turning IJLSZTO into IFZNWTP respectively. When rotating, the piece rotates just like the original piece under regular SRS rules, but the extra block follows.
The new piece has the same wallkicks as the original one, but it takes the extra block in consideration when checking for collision. This means SRS spin setups can be arranged to accommodate for the new piece.

The O tetromino becoming a P pentomino gets one kick per rotation, as the extra block can end up colliding into other blocks or the playfield wall upon rotating. This kick is based off the internal true rotation of the O piece in SRS.

Single player Tetris modes
There are three Tetris single player modes.
- Marathon: Get the highest score in 150 lines (or play endlessly when endless is on).
- Sprint: Clear 40 lines in the fastest time.
- Ultra: Get the highest score within 3 minutes.
Garbage mechanics
In Versus and Party, the number of lines sent is based on whether a Tetris player is challenging a Tetris or Puyo player. In Tetris-only matches, the attack table is the same as in most guideline games, while in matches with Puyo and Tetris players, the same tables are used but with nerfs to adjust game balance, as well as the margin time system applying to Tetris attacks.
