Tetris: New Century is a game included in Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol.28 Tetris Collection, a compilation released for the PlayStation 2. It uses visuals from Sega's 1988 Tetris for arcade.

Gameplay

The game uses the graphical style from the 1988 arcade game, but incorporates standard Guideline rules. Thus, several changes have been made to the gameplay interface:

  • Tetrominoes now follow the standardized coloring scheme of modern games and spawn two rows higher.
  • The piece preview window has been expanded to display 3 pieces, and a Hold window has been added at the left side of the preview window.
  • The score and progress text has been moved to the bottom left of the playfield, and the playfield's background is transparent.

The screen layout is similar to TGM3 and TGMA.

Unlike many later games, the reset behavior can be toggled between infinite move reset and step reset.

You can change controls and bind them to specific buttons. They can even be set not to be bound to any button.[1]

Modes

A total of five modes can be selected in Tetris: New Century, with one being a two-player versus mode.

Marathon

A 150 line guideline Marathon mode. The player has the option to choose the starting level and rows of random garbage.

The block design changes at levels 5, 9 and 13.

Upon completion, they will receive a message from the monkey. The message depends on the completion time. One message is for when the mode is completed in longer than 10 minutes, one for between 5 and 10 minutes, and one for faster than 10 minutes.

40 Line

A sprint mode. The player has the option to begin with garbage.

Ultra

A 3 minute timed mode.

Extra

An endless mode where the level increases every 4 lines. After the gravity reaches 20G, the lock delay becomes shorter and shorter. The level cap is 99.

The block design changes every 10 levels starting from level 10. The score multiplier is the same as the level from levels 1 to 20, but after that only increases every 10 levels:

Level Score multiplier
1-20 Same as level
21-29 20
30-39 21
40-49 22
50-59 23
60-69 24
70-79 25
80-89 26
90-99 27

Two-player

A versus mode with line attack garbage system.

Garbage lines sent are based on the Guideline system with T-spins; however, the garbage holes are based on the TGM system. The extra row from Back-to-Back has two holes, and is sent before the regular 4 Tetris rows. T-Spin rows sent are duplicated.
