Players have been able to manipulate tetrominoes under the naive line clear gravity of popular tetromino games to create artistic accomplishments. Some games reward the player for making specific patterns in the playfield. A well-known pattern is the ">" secret grade in the TGM series. Other games make such patterns the entire point of the game, such as "square" modes in The New Tetris and Tetris Worlds and "puzzle" mode in Lumines.

Some players make videos of the construction of tetromino art.

All clear

TGM series, Puyo Pop, and Lumines reward the player for clearing all blocks from the screen. TGM calls this a "bravo".

Vertical line

Clear the field except for five I tetrominoes in one column. TokusiN demonstrates this on Tetris DS in a video.

Main article: Secret Grade Techniques

If the player fills in all blocks on the lowest ten rows except the main diagonal (1, 1), (2, 2), ..., (10, 10), TGM games grant an automatic S1 "secret grade":

When building this pattern, one tactic to leave the first two holes is by rotating an S tetromino on end, putting it at the left side, and clearing the middle line:
