Tetris: New Century is a remake of the 1988 Sega arcade Tetris game. This game was included in the Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol.28 Tetris Collection for the PlayStation 2.

Gameplay

Tetris: New Century uses the graphical style from the 1988 arcade game, but incorporates standard Guideline rules. Thus, several changes have been made to the gameplay interface:

  • Tetrominoes now follow the standardized coloring scheme of modern games and spawn two rows higher.
  • The piece preview window has been expanded to display 3 pieces, and a Hold window has been added at the left side of the preview window.
  • The score and progress text has been moved to the bottom left of the playfield, and the playfield's background is transparent.

Modes

Marathon

A 150 line guideline Marathon mode. The player has the option to choose the starting level and rows of random garbage.

The block design changes at levels 5, 9 and 13.

If the player completes the marathon mode, they will receive a message from the monkey. The message changes depending on how long it took for the player to complete the mode: more than 10 minutes, between 5 and 10 minutes, or less than 10 minutes.

40 Line

A sprint mode. The player has the option to begin with garbage.

Ultra

A 3 minute timed mode.

Extra

An endless mode where the level increases every 4 lines. After the gravity reaches 20G, the lock delay becomes shorter and shorter. The level cap is 99.

The block design changes every 10 levels starting from level 10. The score multiplier is the same as the level from levels 1 to 20, but after that only increases every 10 levels:

Level Score multiplier
1-20 Same as level
21-29 20
30-39 21
40-49 22
50-59 23
60-69 24
70-79 25
80-89 26
90-99 27

Two-player

A versus mode with line attack garbage system.

Gameplay Info

  • ARE: No
  • DAS: 1G
  • You can toggle the infinity. When turned off, it uses classic step reset behavior instead of modern move reset.
  • This game has "Lock delay cancel using down key" feature, like the Tetris DS. Touch the ground by using soft-drop key, then push the sort-drop key again to lock the Tetromino instantly.
  • Screen layout is similar to TGM3 and TGMA.
  • You can change the settings of buttons. You can even set to "NO ASSIGN". [1]

The game recognizes T-Spins even when they don't clear lines.

Also, the game recognizes back-to-back, but doesn't distinguish between Tetrises and T-spins. For example, if you get 1 T-spin Double and 1 Tetris, it counts as a back-to-back. This allows players to utilize the ST stacking method.
