Modern Tetris games reward the player for twisting the T tetrimino into a tight space. This kind of move is called T-spin.

Some games give scoring rewards for twisting a tetromino into a tight space. When this is done with a T tetromino, it is called a T-spin.
Current rules
Two basic algorithms, with slight variations, have been used in newer games to detect and reward in-place spins:
T-spins are detected and rewarded upon the locking of a T tetrimino. The mechanism can be described as follows:
*Immobile, used in The New Tetris: A twist is recognised if a tetromino locks in a position where it cannot move left, right, or up. There is only a reward if rows are completed in this way. Example:

* The last maneuver of the T tetrimino must be a rotation.
* If there are two minoes in the front corners of the 3 by 3 square occupied by the T (the front corners are ones next to the sticking out mino of the T) and at least one mino in the two other corners (to the back), it is a "proper" T-spin.
* Otherwise, if there is only one mino in two front corners and two minoes to the back corners, it is a Mini T-spin. However, if the last rotation that kicked the T moves its center 1 by 2 blocks (the last rotation offset of SRS), it is still a proper T-spin.

*#Last successful movement of the tetromino was a rotate, as opposed to sideways movement, downward movement, or falling due to gravity. (Canceling lock delay in games that allow it, such as Tetris DS, does not count as a movement.) The tetromino doesn't even have to end up in a different orientation than it was dropped in; setting up the "well-known twist" below in Tetris Worlds or Tetris DS and pressing both rotate buttons (B–A or A–B) will trigger the T-spin bonus even without any net rotation.

Different games add further restrictions:
If the T is facing against a wall or floor, the two back corners are considered as if there were minoes there.
*3-corner T no wall, used in Tetris Worlds: The walls and floor surrounding the playfield are not considered "occupied". This means that if a wall kick places the T tetromino with its flat side against the wall or floor, the T-spin will not be recognized. (Kicks that place the flat side against blocks in the playfield still work.)
*3-corner T no kick, used in Tetris: New Century, iPod Tetris, Tetris Evolution, and most other official guideline games released after 2006: The final rotation must not involve a wall kick, that is, it recognizes only the "well known twist" below.
*Tetris Zone recognises T-spins that involve a wallkick, but will not recognise any T-spin that results in a triple.

Rewards
This mechanism of detection has some scenarios that do not quite make sense as "twisting the T into tight space" but it still rewards them anyway. Some of them are as follows.
Rewards for T-spins first appeared in The New Tetris. The game added a reward for T-spins (and for twists involving other pieces), which would trigger an "avalanche." Henk Rogers implied in his planetgamecube.com interview that it was the mobile game Tetris Battle that inspired the T-Spin's current dominating points and garbage rewards, although T-Spins in a nerfed form found their way into prior guideline games such as Tetris Worlds. As of 2008, the Tetris Guideline seems to favor the 3-corner T no kick rulings.

Modern Tetris games reward the player for twisting the T tetrimino into a tight space. This kind of move is called T-spin.

Current rules

T-spins are detected and rewarded upon the locking of a T tetrimino. The mechanism can be described as follows:

 • The last maneuver of the T tetrimino must be a rotation.
 • If there are two minoes in the front corners of the 3 by 3 square occupied by the T (the front corners are ones next to the sticking out mino of the T) and at least one mino in the two other corners (to the back), it is a "proper" T-spin.
 • Otherwise, if there is only one mino in two front corners and two minoes to the back corners, it is a Mini T-spin. However, if the last rotation that kicked the T moves its center 1 by 2 blocks (the last rotation offset of SRS), it is still a proper T-spin.

Scoring

Main article: Scoring#Recent guideline compatible games

The amount of score awarded for a T-spin depends on the number of lines cleared using it and whether it is Mini.

Lines Mini T-spin T-spin
0 100 400
1 200 800
2 400 1200
3 [Impossible.] 1600

The score is then further multiplied by the level and back-to-back bonus.

Any T-spin that clears lines, whether Mini or not, is considered "difficult" and will trigger back-to-back. T-spins that clear no lines, however, don't break the back-to-back chain.

In battles

T-spins usually send garbage to opponents. T-spin doubles are at least as powerful as a Tetris and are commonly sought after in battles, while T-spin triples are even scarier. Various setups have been created to create opportunities for T-spins and utilize them as much as possible.

Other rules

Immobile

In The New Tetris, T-spins are recognized if the T tetrimino cannot move in any direction when locking. There is only a reward if rows are completed this way.
