Modes
Can be played in all versions
Marathon
Standard marathon mode with 15 level limit.
In website version, this mode always starts from level 1.
In Facebook version, starting level is selectable. If you reach certain level, you can unlock additional skins.
Scoring Strategy
Tetris Friends has a goal system where the way to get to the next level is to clear a certain number of goal lines that increases as the levels do. The optimal way to acheive a high score is using the Single-single combo strategy:
Post specifically about facebook tetris scoring strategy
YouTube - Higher Tetris Splash and Facebook Tetris marathon score's
Sprint
Clear 40 lines as fast as possible. Level is not selectable and fixed to 1.
Sprint 5P
Compete with 4 opponents in Sprint mode. Opponents are just the previously recorded play, and randomly selected based on your current rank.
Ultra
2 minutes ultra mode. Score as many points as possible within 2 minutes. In Facebook version, music is selectable from 5 songs. In website version, however, only "Midnite" music is available. This mode was formerly known as Tetris Solo, and 3 minutes mode was also available. Level is not selectable and fixed to 1. Your score will not be recorded if you top out.
T-Spin with wall kick is allowed even if it is played in Facebook version. However there are some graphical glitches. If you perform TST, only the score marker (the floating "+1600" text) will be displayed.
Website version only
Battle 2P
Fight against a randomly selected opponent for 2 minutes. Send garbage lines to opponent by clearing 2 or more lines at the same time. Garbages doesn't have a hole. You can remove it by attacking your opponent. Top out the opponent 3 times to win the game. If the timer runs out, the amount of garbages sent will be a tie breaker.
As in Sprint 5P mode, opponents are just the previously recorded play. You can select a map. (the initial block patterns, as seen in TOJ)
In Facebook version this mode was available as Battle+ mode, but later replaced by Bomb version.
Battle 6P
Fight against five randomly selected opponents for 2 minutes. In Facebook version this mode was available as Battle+6P mode and time limit was 3 minutes. But later replaced by Bomb version.
Survival
This mode features similar objective as marathon, but has different goal system. Level advances by clearing every 10 lines. After you beat 20th level, you'll enter the "Bonus Level". The bonus level is semi-invisible challenge, and the game continues until you top out. This mode is available only in website version. In Facebook version it was available as Holiday mode, but it's not available now.
1989
This mode simulates classic GameBoy version of Tetris, but it's not so accurate. For example, DAS is somewhat faster, the gravity at level 15 is slower than original, and it has lock delay. Both A and B type game can be played, but B-type game doesn't have a separate leaderboard.
N-Blox
This game is based off an unofficial Tetris game called N-Blox. It has classic game elements: no lock delay, no hold piece, no ghost piece, no wallkick, only one piece preview, endless game time, and no keyboard customization.
Arena (open beta)
2-6 player realtime battle game Each garbage has single hole in it and erasable. Garbage countering is weaker than TOJ because clearing a line does not delay the garbage rising. Some rooms have items, which can be used to attack opponents or help you. Unlike many other games, T-Spin Mini (T-Spin Single with wallkick) cannot send any garbage lines. After 90-150 seconds, each player begins to receive one line of garbage every 3 seconds. Garbage given to you this way has no gaps at all and is unclearable.
Rally 8P (open beta)
The object of this game is to clear your way down the obstacle course in order to reach the GOAL zone before your opponents do. This mode has Sticky-by-color gravity. The same colored blocks glue themselves together; making it difficult to fall. The gravity system is similar to The Next Tetris and Tetris Worlds Sticky mode, but any contiguous group of the same color with 25 or more blocks will not disappear. You compete with seven opponents, and they are just the previously recorded play. There are 12 items, but there is no option to disable them.
Facebook version only
Battle+
Fight against a randomly selected opponent for 2 minutes. Each garbage has a bomb block, and explodes when you place a piece above it. Bomb explosion can start/maintain the combo sequence. Unlike Battle 2P mode, you can't remove garbage by attacking your opponent, and 5 KOs are required to instant win.
Battle+6P
Fight against five randomly selected opponent for 2 minutes (with bomb blocks).
BlockStar
This mode is remake of the first Tetris game released on Facebook. It has classic game elements: no hold piece, no ghost piece, no wallkick, no hard drop, only one piece preview, endless game time, and more. There are lock delay and lock reset, but since there is no wallkick, it is harder to use. This mode is available only in Facebook version, and requires an account to play.
Discontinued game modes
Acorn Drop
IceAge themed 150 lines marathon game. All pieces have same colors AND designs. It was available in the website version.
