The New Tetris for N64 was developed by H2O and published by Nintendo. Like Tetrisphere before it, The New Tetris features a soundtrack by Neil Voss.
It had lock delay, soft and firm drop, 4x4 squares, hold piece (though not IHS), three next pieces, ghost piece (TLS), and milder wall kick than SRS (notably, T-spin triples don't work but lock delay is still abusable on no-garbage play). The game features an unusual and unique compensation system, tuned around the sometimes bizarre tetromino configurations required for making gold and silver squares. Its speed never gets anywhere near 20G.
- single: +1 point
- double: +2 points
- triple: +3 points
- tetris: +5 points
- make 4x4 square of one type of tetromino: +0 points, form gold square
- make other 4x4 square: +0 points, form silver square
- clear each line of silver square: +5 points
- clear each line of gold square: +10 points
- in-place spin: +0 points
- in-place spin single or higher: causes earthquake that breaks blocks into individual pieces that cascade to form lines, may break up silver and gold squares
- lines after this earthquake: not determined
Top-out condition is the same as in Atari's Tetяis and the "push" mode of Nintendo's Tetris DS: the game ends when one block is placed above the playfield's top row.
The New Tetris defines an in-place spin differently from the "T-spin" rule used in Tetris Worlds, Tetris DS, and other games that use SRS. In this game, an in-place spin occurs when a tetromino locks in a position such that it cannot move left, right, or up.
Successor: "Square Tetris" mode in Tetris Worlds
